Staging, promote and roll back

A staging environment next to production, promoting exactly the same build, and going back to an earlier version.

Staging is a second environment of your project, with its own address, its own variables and its own database. You test there, then promote the same build to production. Staging is in Standard and up, counts towards your plan at no extra cost and is never shown in Google.

Add staging

Open your project, click production at the top and choose Add staging. Staging gets the same apps, variables, connections and live versions as production, on its own address ending in -staging.cubli.app. The same button at the top switches between the environments.

Want production’s data on staging? Click Copy production to staging. You first see what happens: the versions, the databases’ content and the files. What was on staging is replaced.

Deploy to staging

  • CLI: cubli up --staging deploys the linked folder to the app with the same name in staging.
  • AI tool: ask it to deploy to staging; the deploy tool has a staging option.
  • GitHub: an app on staging builds from the same repo and branch as production. To build staging from another branch, such as develop, open the app on staging, choose Settings, Source and pick the Branch there.
  • Dashboard: in the staging environment, everything works as in production.

Promote to production

Promoting sends exactly the same build from staging to production. Nothing is rebuilt, so what you tested is what goes live. Production keeps its own variables and data.

  • One app: open the app on staging, choose Deploys and click Promote to production next to the version.
  • Everything at once: click Promote staging to production at the top.
  • AI tool: the promote tool, after you agreed.

Staging’s database and files do not go to production.

Roll back

Every version that was live is kept. Going back to an earlier version happens without rebuilding, and with the variables that version ran with.

  • Dashboard: open the app, choose Deploys and click Make this version live.
  • CLI:
cubli deployments
cubli rollback <deployment-id>
  • AI tool: ask it to go back to the previous version; the tool is called rollback.

Redeploy restarts the live version with the current settings. Nothing is rebuilt.

Remove staging

Click Remove staging in Project settings (the gear at the top right). Production is not affected.
